Zach Maurer

Zach turned 15 today.

I’ve got to tell you, I am very impressed with the young man he is turning into. He is a sensative soul, has a creative mind, and a big heart. He loves video games, enjoys reading, and does well in school. He is involved with the church youth group and enjoys Intro to Robotics and Stage Movement in school.

How often can a parent say they like hanging out with their teenage son? Well I can… and I do!

Another phase of life I am learning to accept is that my kids are growing up. I see this growth in their personalities, how they spend their free time, and their interactions with others.

Add to that list the fact that Kara has just been accepted to Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. She is applying to several colleges, but NNU is the first to send that exciting acceptance letter. Of course with her grades and SAT scores, she’ll likely get accepted at any university where she applies, but that first one is always special!

So, my little girl is growing up. She is blooming. And I can accept that!

I am a proud papa, and I approved this message.

Bragging Rights

I’m proud of my kids. They are turning into such amazing young people. But every once in awhile there is a week that gives me an extra reason to sing the praises of my children.

We just spent the day Monday in Seattle at the Western International Band Clinic. This is Kara’s third year as a selected participant. Picture 600 of the top high school musicians from Oregon and Washington gathered together. Then add world class conductors/composers from Belgium, Italy, and the U.S. The grand finale of this weekend event is a four hour concert where each of the four bands perform songs written by the conductors who they have worked with for approximately 10 hours. What an amazing experience.

To top it all off, Kara has been selected this year for Oregon’s All-State Band AND for All-Northwest Band!

Nope, I’m not done yet! She also received her SAT scores and we are all blown away by a score of 2180!

Graduation 2008

I remember with fondness the day Zach was born… the way his sister cuddled him as an infant… the intense feeling of pride and awe as this new little boy joined our family. I’ve had many memories since then of my baby boy growing into a young man. And today he took another memorable step. He graduated from the 8th grade.

And to add to that memory, Zach was honored with the Presidential Education Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence.

Way to go, Zach! Welcome to your High School years!
